Student Involvement with the International Alliance of Research Universities
While there are no formal student exchange arrangements in place at a PhD level, higher degree research (HDR) students are able to independently arrange a research visit to an IARU partner using existing networks. HDR students will be considered visitors at the IARU partner but not “exchange students”.
The Vice Chancellor has made available travel grants (ANU travel grant) to enable HDR students to undertake a period of study at an overseas institution. To access the ANU travel grant, applicants must have completed one year full-time (or equivalent) of their candidature. Applicants may seek funding of up to $5000.

Resources and budget
A nominal allocation, for the total length of candidature, of up to $6,000 for each doctoral candidate and $3,000 for each MPhil candidate is provided by CEDAM to cover the costs associated with candidate's research. The funds are expected to cover any specialised technology and software e.g. digital recorder; conference travel and registration; and services e.g. transcription. In general, candidates are encouraged to attend and present at least one international conference during Candidature (with financial support). Candidates are asked to apply to the Research Programs Convenor for funds, providing a rationale and budget.
All full time PhD and MPhil candidates in CEDAM are provided with the following resources:
- Shared office accommodation, including a desk, chair, an adequate computer, and a lockable filing cabinet.
- Reasonable provision of stationery and postage.
- Reasonable levels of printing from the candidate's office computer.
- Photocopying facilities
- Access to email and the Internet. Candidates need to be aware that all Internet access is centrally monitored.
- Reasonable use of a telephone for local calls
- Access to fax facilities
Part-time candidates do not have individual office accommodation but do have access to one of a number of part-time candidates' offices, where they can use a desk, computer and have access to email. In these offices, candidates do not 'own' any particular desk or computer. Part-time candidates' access to all other resources is on a pro rata basis.
